About

Origin Story

Every good origin story begins with some type of accident or incident that leaves the hero or villain scarred, but aware of their new superpowers. While I am definitely not a hero (though I may sometimes be perceived as a villain depending on who you ask), the origin story of Enlightened by Jen follows a similar narrative.

In 2023, I experienced something I believe is very similar to what Brene Brown called "The Midlife Unravelling." This was prompted by a few major events in my life, the death of my father, the onset of menopause, and the shifting landscape of higher education (where I've spent most of my professional career) post-pandemic. I'll spare you the gory details, but this perfectionist, caretaking, people-pleaser, discovered that she could not please everyone and that she suddenly had less people to take care of. With the help of my amazing partner, Bret, my children (one is actually a teenager and the other is an adult), and some wonderful friends, colleagues, and trusted advisors, I realized it was time to put myself back on my "list." I felt broken, but ultimately, it was through exploring the cracks that I found what had been missing.

I learned that it is common for women in their 50's to go through this process, known as "The Awakening." An article I recently read on the subject says, "It has the appearance of crazy to those around her and many will say, “Well that’s out of character for her.” But is it? How would they know? They knew her by the roles she played and purposes she served, but they never knew her. She just let them all believe their own story. She knew who she was and she was the one who would say to her heart... someday."  You can read the entire article at "The Awakening of 50-Plus Women." (Warning: the article contains profanity.)

The difference for me is that I didn't even allow myself to think of "someday."  I completely shut down parts of myself and locked them away.  Whether this happened intentionally or gradually over time, I really don't know.  All I know is that somehow, I had forgotten the creative and artistic parts of myself.

One day, as I was preparing to recycle an empty bottle, I found that I couldn't bring myself to toss it. It was too cool. A lightbulb went off in my head (pun intended) and I decided to learn how to make a lamp out of it.

Since becoming a lamp maker, I've enjoyed experimenting, learning new skills and exploring new mediums. I've discovered that I have a talent for bringing more light into the world by upcycling bottles and other items, and I'm excited to share my rediscovered talents and new passion with you!

I must also share credit where it is due. My partner, Bret, is an avid and skilled woodworker.  Fortunately, he has all of the necessary equipment and the knowledge base to help me learn this craft. I am but a Padawan and he is my Jedi Knight.

I hope my story might inspire others and I look forward to hearing yours.  Feel free to drop me a message with your "Awakening" story at enlightendedbyjen@gmail.com
